IAKP Code of Ethics and Professional Practice

IAKP Code of Ethics and Professional Practice

This is an extract from the IAKP’s Code of Practice, specifically relating to working with clients. All members of the IAKP agree to uphold these standards as a guide to excellence in professional conduct.

Purpose

A professional Kambô Practitioner is fundamentally concerned with the welfare of clients. Practitioners agree to follow this Code to protect clients from poor practice and to take full responsibility for their actions.

Core Principles

  • Act in the best interests of clients and treat them with respect.
  • Take responsibility for your own actions.
  • Respect other practitioners and health professionals.
  • Practice only within the limits of your competence.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene, knowledge, and skills.
  • Observe confidentiality and comply with IAKP procedures.
  • Ensure your behaviour upholds the reputation of the profession.

Professional Conduct

Members must act with courtesy, dignity, discretion, and tact at all times. Proper moral conduct must guide the practitioner–client relationship. Any suggestion or action that may be interpreted as sexual is strictly forbidden.

Practitioners shall respect all individuals regardless of race, colour, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.

Scope of Practice

  • Never claim to “cure.” Therapeutic benefits may be described, but recovery cannot be guaranteed.
  • Do not countermand a doctor’s instructions or prescribe medical treatments unless medically qualified.
  • Do not provide diagnoses; advise clients to consult registered medical practitioners where needed.
  • Do not treat animals, attend women in childbirth, or treat them within 42 days postpartum.
  • Do not act as principal treatment for notifiable diseases unless qualified.
  • Do not administer remedies, herbs, or supplements outside your training and qualifications.

Client Relationship

  • Fully explain procedures, consultation length, number of sessions, and fees before treatment.
  • Recognise the client’s right to refuse treatment or ignore advice.
  • Keep clear and comprehensive records where appropriate.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, disclosing information only with client consent or where required by law.
  • Comply with data protection laws of your country.

Membership Terms

Membership begins upon successful completion of IAKP training. It is continuous, renewed annually, and subject to the payment of membership fees. Members agree to:

  • Respect copyright of IAKP materials.
  • Not sell Kambô sticks to non-members.
  • Not train others in Kambô unless authorised.
  • Seek permission before engaging with media.
  • Follow complaints procedures and decisions of the IAKP governing body.

Goodwill & Cancellation

Membership may be cancelled for non-payment or by written notice. Members experiencing financial or personal hardship may apply for goodwill provisions. Re-joining after a lapse may require extra training or fees.

Final Notes

Members must ensure all equipment and working conditions are suitable for Kambô practice. Practitioners must not film or photograph clients while they are receiving Kambô. The practitioner’s sole focus must remain on holding safe, respectful space for the client’s process.
